Car Hire Montenegro – Choose the best option for your needs

We have a great collections of high-quality cars and vans. Whether you're looking for mini van, a large sprinter, pickup truck, SUV or even a luxury car – we got you!

Choosing the right rental vehicle depends on your travel needs, whether it’s comfort, space, or terrain capability. SUVs are great for long road trips, offering a mix of comfort and versatility, especially if you're traveling through mixed terrains or unpredictable weather.

Vans are ideal for larger groups or cargo transport, perfect for family trips or business needs. MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) are a practical choice for urban driving with extra passenger space, making them a great middle ground between sedans and vans.

Pickup trucks excel in handling heavy loads and rugged environments, ideal for work or outdoor adventures. If you're tackling off-road trails or harsh conditions, a 4x4 provides the traction and durability needed for a safe and reliable drive. Choosing wisely ensures a smoother and more comfortable journey.

All our rental cars are environmentally friendly, and well-equipped. We are happy to help you choose the right vehicle or with any other questions you have in mind.

Driving in Montenegro – Good to know when renting a car

Montenegro drives on the right-hand side, and road signs are in Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. Most roads are well-maintained, especially between major towns, but mountain routes can be narrow and winding. Expect sharp curves, tunnels, and occasional livestock crossings.

Drivers from the EU, UK, USA, and Canada can use their home license; other nationalities may need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry your passport, license, insurance, and rental documents at all times.

Speed Limits in Montenegro are 50 km/h (31 mph), 80 km/h (50 mph) on open roads, and 100–120 km/h (62–75 mph) on highways/expressroads.

Headlights must be on at all times, even during the day.
Seatbelts are mandatory, and mobile phone use is only allowed hands-free.

Mountain driving requires attention—many scenic routes have tight passes with limited guardrails. In winter, snow chains or winter tires may be mandatory in some areas (Nov–Apr).

Toll roads are rare, but you may encounter fees at certain tunnels or international crossings. Fuel stations are widespread on major roads and near towns. Most accept credit/debit cards and cash in Euros (€). In remote areas, keep your tank at least half full to avoid surprises.

Parking in cities like Kotor, Budva, and Podgorica may be limited in peak season. Use paid street parking zones (check signs and meters), hotel/private lots, or underground garages in busy tourist zones.

Cetinje – Montenegro’s old royal capital, rich in museums and culture

Lake Skadar – Birdwatching, kayaking, and wine country in one place

🌉 Border Crossings (With Rental Permission)

Dubrovnik, Croatia – 2.5 hours from Podgorica or 1.5 from Tivat

Shkodër, Albania – Less than 2 hours from Podgorica

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina – Around 4–5 hours inland

Always confirm cross-border travel with your rental provider and request green card insurance if needed.

FAQs About Driving and Renting a Car in Montenegro

Is it safe to drive in Montenegro?

Yes, especially during the day. Mountain routes require caution, but the road system is well maintained and improving yearly.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Montenegro?

Not if you're from the EU, UK, US, or Canada. If your license isn’t in Latin script or you're staying longer than 30 days, an IDP is recommended.

What type of car should I rent?

A compact or economy car is great for coastal towns. An SUV or mid-size is better for the mountains or families.

Are there toll roads in Montenegro?

No general tolls, but you may pay for tunnels or cross-border entries.

Is it easy to park in tourist towns in Montenegro?

It depends. Kotor and Budva get crowded in summer, so use public garages or book accommodations with parking.

Can I take a rental car to other countries?

Yes! We usually allow cross-border travel, but please always let us know your travel plans before-hand, and make sure to check restrictions and additional fees with us before your trip!
