When you collect your Vehicle:
Think ahead. It's a good idea to map out your trip in advance, especially if you're returning the rental car to an unfamiliar location or airport. Check your confirmation email to make sure you know where to meet your agent or where the rental desk, and save the contact details to your phone for quick access.
Bring the necessary documents. While we strive to make the check-in process as simple as possible, some information is required by law. Having your reservation information, driver's license, passport and credit card ready in advance can speed up your reservation process. If you choose to self-insure, make sure that you have verifiable proof of full coverage insurance at the time of rental pickup. If you are a local renter, make sure that you have all the information required by the location to confirm your ID and address.
Conduct a car inspection. Perform a detailed walk around inspection as soon as the vehicle is received to note any existing damage on the rental agreement. The five damage hotspots that we've discovered deserve special attention. You are shielded from responsibility when you return the vehicle by disclosing any existing damage prior to leaving the location.
While you rent:
Take care. Please be advised that depending on the rental coverage you chose, you could be responsible for any damage that occurs during the rental period. Take measures to reduce the possibility of collisions leading to dings and scratches, especially in congested parking areas.
When you return your vehicle:
Complete one more vehicle inspection. Conduct a second inspection during the return procedure, and no matter how little it may look, carefully record any damage. This approach enables us to handle your refund quickly while making sure you are completely insured. The five damage hotspots should receive special attention, just as they did during the initial assessment.

General Juan N. Álvarez International Airport (ACA) serves Acapulco, one of Mexico’s most legendary coastal destinations. Located about 26 kilometers (16 miles) southeast of the city center, ACA is the main air entry point for both domestic and international visitors coming to enjoy golden beaches, cliff diving shows, and iconic bay views.
While Acapulco’s central strip and hotel zone are walkable or accessible by taxi, many of the area’s best experiences — from secluded beaches to hillside viewpoints and surf villages — are best reached by car. Renting a vehicle at the airport offers visitors flexibility, comfort, and the opportunity to explore Guerrero state on their own terms.

Great experience! It was the first time our family was travelling to Cabo San Lucas, but the staff here treated us extremely well, gave us the best price, and even gave us reccomendations on places to eat and shop. They only rent out new, top condition cars. the other people in my party had gone next door to rent their cars and they not only paid a higher price, they also got very old, dirty cars that broke down days later and were charged extra when they returned it (for damage that was already there). the staff at U-Save were very honest and kind, especially Carlos. Would reccomend completely!
Driving in Acapulco offers an immersive way to experience both the city’s famous coastline and the less-explored interior of the Guerrero region. As with the rest of Mexico, vehicles drive on the right-hand side, and road signs are in Spanish, but they generally follow international symbols and are easy to interpret. Most rental vehicles at ACA are automatic and modern, making them convenient and comfortable for foreign visitors.
Upon leaving the airport, the roads leading toward Acapulco Diamante and the hotel zone are wide, relatively well-maintained, and clearly marked. However, traffic can be congested during holidays and weekends, especially on the main coastal road (Avenida Costera Miguel Alemán). Within the city, drivers should expect a mix of informal road behavior: locals often change lanes suddenly, ignore traffic lights, and use their horns liberally. It’s important to drive defensively, especially in dense traffic zones and near informal intersections where right-of-way is ambiguous.
Speed limits in Acapulco and throughout Mexico are posted in kilometers per hour. Within urban areas like the city center, limits usually range from 40–60 km/h, while rural roads allow for up to 80 km/h, and highways may go as high as 110 km/h. While locals often drive faster than posted limits, tourists are strongly advised to follow them closely. Police checkpoints are common along the highway and coastal roads — especially when exiting the airport — and officers may request your driver’s license, passport copy, and rental documentation.
Another feature to be aware of is the prevalence of topes, or speed bumps. These can appear without warning in residential zones, school areas, or near markets. Many are unmarked and can cause serious damage to vehicles if taken too fast. Similarly, potholes, uneven pavement, and road construction are not uncommon, particularly in hillside neighborhoods or less touristic zones.
Night driving is possible, but not generally recommended outside of the main hotel areas. Lighting is inconsistent in more remote zones, and the presence of pedestrians, stray animals, or poorly lit speed bumps can pose hazards. During the day, though, coastal drives and hillside routes offer spectacular views — just take care on curving roads with minimal guardrails.
Gas stations are typically full-service, with attendants who pump the gas for you. Payments can be made by cash or card, though it’s wise to keep some pesos on hand for tips and smaller stations.
Parking is available throughout Acapulco’s commercial and beach districts. Hotels and resorts offer dedicated lots, and most shopping centers and restaurants have private or guarded parking areas. On the street, parking attendants (informal or official) may help guide you and watch your vehicle in exchange for a small tip. Always avoid parking in front of red curbs, driveways, or near intersections, and watch for signage such as “No Estacionar” (No Parking).
Despite some quirks, driving in Acapulco is comfortable and safe for travelers who drive responsibly. The road network connects everything from historical landmarks like La Quebrada cliff diving arena to natural gems like Laguna de Tres Palos or the Petatlán gold market. With your own car, you can explore it all — on your schedule and at your pace.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Acapulco?
Not if your home license is in the Roman alphabet. U.S., Canadian, and most European licenses are valid for stays under 180 days. If your license is not in a Roman script, an IDP is recommended.
Is it safe to drive from the airport into the city?
Yes. The main roads from ACA into Acapulco’s hotel zones are modern and well-traveled. Traffic can be heavy, but conditions are safe for tourists, especially during daylight hours.
Are toll roads used near Acapulco?
Toll roads are more common when entering from Mexico City or along the Costa Grande highway. Near Acapulco, most local roads are free, but always carry cash in pesos just in case.
What kind of vehicle should I rent?
A compact or mid-size car is fine for beach areas and the city. If you plan to explore mountain roads or remote beaches, an SUV may be more comfortable and better suited to varied terrain.
Are police checkpoints common?
