Before you rent:
Make an informed choice. We believe in providing you with options to choose the right car for your needs with complete price transparency. At U-Save, we prioritize your peace of mind, which means rental insurance with us is not overly complicated and you are assured you are properly insured.
When you collect your Vehicle:
Think ahead. It's a good idea to map out your trip in advance, especially if you're returning the rental car to an unfamiliar location or airport. Check your confirmation email to make sure you know where to meet your agent or where the rental desk, and save the contact details to your phone for quick access.
Bring the necessary documents. While we strive to make the check-in process as simple as possible, some information is required by law. Having your reservation information, driver's license, passport and credit card ready in advance can speed up your reservation process. If you choose to self-insure, make sure that you have verifiable proof of full coverage insurance at the time of rental pickup. If you are a local renter, make sure that you have all the information required by the location to confirm your ID and address.
Conduct a car inspection. Perform a detailed walk around inspection as soon as the vehicle is received to note any existing damage on the rental agreement. The five damage hotspots that we've discovered deserve special attention. You are shielded from responsibility when you return the vehicle by disclosing any existing damage prior to leaving the location.
While you rent:
Take care. Please be advised that depending on the rental coverage you chose, you could be responsible for any damage that occurs during the rental period. Take measures to reduce the possibility of collisions leading to dings and scratches, especially in congested parking areas.
When you return your vehicle:
Complete one more vehicle inspection. Conduct a second inspection during the return procedure, and no matter how little it may look, carefully record any damage. This approach enables us to handle your refund quickly while making sure you are completely insured. The five damage hotspots should receive special attention, just as they did during the initial assessment.
Drive on the right side of the road.

While Lecce’s old town is best explored on foot, a car rental becomes essential if you plan to travel beyond the city. With a car, you gain access to:
Stunning Ionian and Adriatic beaches, such as Punta Prosciutto, Torre Lapillo, Otranto, and Santa Maria di Leuca
Inland treasures like Specchia, Galatina, and Martano
Remote vineyards, olive farms, and masserie (rural estates) offering authentic Salento experiences
Freedom to follow your own schedule, especially in areas with infrequent public transport
Easy drives along scenic coastal roads, including the SP358 Adriatic route to Otranto and beyond
Driving in Lecce and the surrounding Salento region is generally relaxed, though drivers should be prepared for narrow village roads, unpredictable scooters, and limited signage in rural areas. Roads are mostly paved and in decent condition, though potholes can be found in the countryside.
Vehicles drive on the right-hand side, and most rental cars have manual transmissions. If you require an automatic, request it well in advance.
Italian speed limits apply here:
50 km/h (31 mph) in urban areas
90 km/h (56 mph) on rural roads
110 km/h (68 mph) on dual carriageways
130 km/h (81 mph) on highways (autostrade – few of which are near Lecce)
While the Salento region doesn’t have many toll roads, if you drive north toward Bari or Naples, you’ll encounter toll booths on autostrade. Payment is accepted by cash or card.
Parking in Lecce’s historic center is restricted due to ZTL zones (Zona a Traffico Limitato). Be sure not to enter these areas without a permit, as they are enforced by cameras and result in automatic fines. Use designated parking areas just outside the old town and walk in.
Fuel stations are common in and around Lecce. Most accept credit or debit cards, though some rural stations are still cash-only or close during lunch hours. Fill up in advance if heading into remote areas.
Road signs may not always be in English, so it’s helpful to use Google Maps or a GPS app with voice guidance. Driving along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts offers spectacular views and easy stops in fishing villages and cliffside beaches.
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers, and using a mobile phone without a hands-free system is prohibited. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%, and enforcement is strict — avoid drinking before driving.
If you need help while driving in Italy, please don't hesitate to contact us! In an emergency, dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire services.
