Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Austria?
For EU and EEA drivers, a national license is sufficient. Non-EU visitors may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their national license.
Few countries in Europe are as magical as Austria - an alpine land hugged by sweeping pine forests, glistening lakes and Baroque-studded cities. The natural starting point is the staggeringly beautiful capital Vienna. Don’t confine yourself to just the capital though!
Renting a car in Austria is a great choice, especially if you plan to explore beyond the cities. While public transport is excellent, a car provides flexibility to visit remote alpine villages, hidden castles, and scenic routes like the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Driving is safe and well-organized, with smooth highways and clear signage, making it easy for travelers to explore at their own pace.

These guys were great! They picked us up near the airport in a very convenient location and were super nice. When they took us to our car, they were very clear about the process and the car was clean, technically problem free, and smelled great! Return was super simple. They took us back to where we were picked up (at the airport) after a brief look around the car for any damages. I would highly recommend this company for car rental . . . It was a dream. Thanks U Save!

This rental car agency provides excellent service at very low cost. Pickup from the airport was swift, the car was ready and prepared to take, the return and drop-off at the airport was equally quick. The staff working there are very polite and nice.

For those navigating Austrian roads for the first time, take a moment to familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and use GPS or navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze.
In Austria, driving is on the right-hand side. A valid national driver’s license is required, and depending on your home country, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be necessary. All our rental cars include mandatory safety equipment such as a warning triangle, reflective vest, and first aid kit.
Austria has smooth, well-maintained roads, making it a pleasure to drive. Be prepared for mountain roads with sharp turns, and we'll take care of winter tire requirements between November and April.
Speed Limits in Austria are 50 km/h (31 mph) in urban areas, 100 km/h (62 mph) on rural roads, and 130 km/h (81 mph) on highways.
A toll vignette is required for highways. Most of our rental cars already have one, but we'll confirm this before you head to road.
Parking in Austrian cities is regulated, and P+R (Park & Ride) lots are a good option to avoid city-center congestion.
Fuel stations are widely available, and Austrian roads have plenty of service areas for long trips.
If you need help while driving in Austria, don't hesitate to contact us! In an emergency, dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire services, and 120 for ÖAMTC roadside assistance. We'll also be happy to help you with any questions or problems.

We have a great collections of high-quality cars and vans. Whether you're looking for mini van, a large sprinter, pickup truck, SUV or even a luxury car – we got you!
Choosing the right rental vehicle depends on your travel needs, whether it’s comfort, space, or terrain capability. SUVs are great for long road trips, offering a mix of comfort and versatility, especially if you're traveling through mixed terrains or unpredictable weather.
Vans are ideal for larger groups or cargo transport, perfect for family trips or business needs. MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) are a practical choice for urban driving with extra passenger space, making them a great middle ground between sedans and vans.
Pickup trucks excel in handling heavy loads and rugged environments, ideal for work or outdoor adventures. If you're tackling off-road trails or harsh conditions, a 4x4 provides the traction and durability needed for a safe and reliable drive. Choosing wisely ensures a smoother and more comfortable journey.
All our rental cars are environmentally friendly, and well-equipped. We are happy to help you choose the right vehicle or with any other questions you have in mind.
